Known for its white sandy beaches and sahara-style sand dunes, Gran Canaria is located just off Northwestern Africa and is Spain’s second largest canary islands. Unknown to myself and I’m sure many, Gran Canaria boasts a spread of magnificant landscapes, rugged mountainous views with unspoiled peaks, award-winning wines and perennial warmth all year round! Making it the perfect destination for a summer holiday this time of year if you want to escape the cooler months!
We visited a few of weeks ago in the middle of August – peak summer season – meaning the beaches and the resorts were full of tourists! What did we expect I hear you ask, I definitely knew the beaches were going to be busy but not cray cray crowded! It meant when we wanted to relax and sunbathe we opted for the pool at our hotel a lot of the time! More on our hotel later on.
We stayed in Playa del Ingles, a resort known for its night life and bustling bars however my favourite place; Puerto de Mogàn. A quieter, culture filled village with an enticing crescent of sandy beach and just next door a small but busy harbour and fishing port!
It’s the complete opposite to its rival resorts as this village takes on a pleasing aesthetic! Known as the ‘Venice of the Canary Islands’, it’s not hard to see why! Puerto de Mogán has an intimate feel, what with the cobbled streets, the understated architecture and the bridged waterways! The entire village is bursting with culture and many of the lanes and alleyways are covered in the stunning and vibrantly coloured bougainvillea making the small village feel even more maze like!
We visited the vivacious resort on a Friday morning which saw a street market take over the most of the village! Drawing in hundred and hundreds of people, the market sells everything you’d ever want to pick up! From local produce, to local art, souvenirs and a knock off pair of sunglasses or two!
An Oasis of Peace & Relaxation
For the duration of our stay in Gran Canaria, we stayed at Hotel Gold by Marina! An adults only hotel, it was an oasis of peace and relaxation! Our time here was full of food, delicious cocktails, endless naps and sunbathing as well as some flamingo fun! This instagrammable hotel boasted so many idyllic and photogenic corners, creating the perfect atmosphere to forget the stresses of everyday life which is exactly what you want when on holiday!
Making the most of the hotel’s facilities we opted to have a back and shoulders massage in their wellness cottage! At €30 for 1 hour it was incredible value and I did very nearly fall asleep!!
Located in Playa Del Ingles, the hotel was a short but steep 15 minute walk from the beach and the nearest stretch of bars and restaurants! There were plenty to choose from with many having tables along the sea front to take in such glorious ocean views.
Now I couldn’t have gone to Gran Canaria and not visit the untouched dunes of Maspalomas! The dunes fold back from the beach which stretches along the coast of about 2 miles! What every beach bound sun loving tourist loves to hear!! I do include myself in that!
Part dessert, part nudist zone, the beach of Maspalomas is one of Gran Canaria’s most iconic beaches! If you take a stroll along the beach you will find yourself shocked by what you stumble upon (as my dad and brother did themselves ha!) as many nudists are in their element!
