When it comes to foundation, I have been obsessed with finding the perfect one for years! I have bought so many on my quest, searching for the not too dewy, not too matte finish. Some will love a particular base and others won’t! It truly depends on what you want from a foundation; weather that’s either a full or light coverage, a matte or dewy finish. There are so many options what with brands releasing new foundations on a monthly basis that it can be extremely overwhelming; but I finally feel as though I have found my top 5 which are all fabulous for different reasons.
To keep my skin looking fresh throughout the year, I like to switch between different types. Sometimes, I just love the perfected look a full coverage base provides; the velvety finish that’s so glamorous and old Hollywood. On most days I like to wear a light to medium coverage base but every now and then when I’m heading ‘out, out’ and want to achieve that flawless, airbrushed finish a full coverage foundation gives which always makes me feel put together.
On an every day basis I like to wear something a little lighter to let my skin breathe; there seems to be a a huge hype around full/longwear foundations which you can’t feel on the skin and I’ve included one which I love in my top 5! I’ve been using all of these foundations on/off for the past year so I am fully ready to give you the low down on each one.
1. Bare Minerals Bare Pro Liquid Foundation
Award winning foundation Bare Minerals Bare Pro liquid foundation is firmly in my top 5. Since being recommended it by Josie from Fashion Mumblr I have not stopped using it as an everyday base. It’s often said that foundation isn’t as good for our skin as we all think. Well think again, because the luxurious creamy liquid contains bamboo stem extract and papaya enzymes which improve the skins texture over time & doesn’t clog the pores. This means that it doesn’t break me out and has made my skin visibly softer and smoother.
As well as caring for your skin, the liquid mineral foundation provides a full but breathable coverage; so while it provides a full coverage it absolutely does not feel like it. In fact it doesn’t feel like I am wearing anything at all. It manages to blur pores and imperfections whilst still looking like my skin. It doesn’t move around either but like with most foundations, I will have to touch up later on in the day but no where near as much. I love that it gives me a natural dewy finish, not too matte but not too glowy either. With more than 30 shades to choose from there will definitely be a colour for your true skin tone.
2. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk
Ah, Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation – perhaps my holy grail of them all, it holds a very special place in my heart. One of the most versatile foundations I own, the formula is creamy, light but most importantly build-able. I can wear this during the day time as a light base, or use a beauty-blender for a more full-coverage finish.
I would wear this for any special occasion as not only is it enriched with micro-fill technology for long lasting brightening powers but, like a good best friend, I can always count on it to make me feel and look so much better on a bad skin day.
The luminous silk foundation doesn’t necessarily do what it says on the bottle – the word ‘luminous’ implies it is going to provide you with a super dewy, gorgeous glow however the finish is much more natural which I actually prefer as it gives this velvet finish which means you really don’t need any setting powder.
With just one pump, I had more than enough product to cover my face, blemishes, dark circles, and all. I found myself oohing and ahhing the entire time.Instead of sitting on top of the skin, it sinks into the skin beautifully so again it looks like your skin but better. My only negative would be that the shades are quite confusing so definitely go to a counter if you can. For reference I am shade 4.5 in the Winter and 5.5 when I have a tan; other than that it truly deserves all of the hype.
3. Estee Lauder Double Wear BB Cusion
Finally, a lightweight foundation I hear you say. I don’t have particularly great skin, like many I am self conscious about it so I do prefer a medium to full coverage base; but this lightweight, hydrating formula from Estée Lauder is perfect for those ‘no make-up, make-up’ days.
At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the compact cushion idea since I don’t really take a foundation out with me, only a concealer; but boy was I wrong. It is actually really useful for touch ups on the go, since it not only comes with a sponge but it isn’t messy in your bag either. Unlike other foundations which can look cakey the more you put on, this just feels refreshingly delightful.
It feels extremely comfortable on the skin and I have not once had that tight feeling you get at the end of the day when wearing this for longer than 8 hours but bare in mind that touch ups are definitely needed.
4. Guerlain Terracotta Joli
Guerlain’s Terracotta Joli is hands down my favourite Summer foundation. It’s described as a beautifying, sun kissed foundation and it truly does deliver exactly that. When ever I wear this my skin looks instantly both healthier and happier, as if I’ve just come back from a week in the sun.
It’s lightweight formula provides a light to medium coverage whilst imparting a radiant glow from within as it is supposed to work as a base prior to applying the terracotta bronzing powder but I find that any bronzer works just as well. I add a dusting of powder over the top just to keep it in place and the formula stays put for a good 8 hours in 25 degree heat, so it’s safe to say this hero product is sweat resistant – a gross but serious thought to consider in warmer climates.
It gives the appearance of a make up free look which is just what I want during the summer months yet my skin looks more even, smoother and flawless. And on another plus side, it also has SPF 20 within the formula which makes it even more perfect for Summer.
5. Nip & Fab Foundation
At £12.99, this foundation is one of the most affordable I think I’ve ever come across and yet it is just as good as the other 4, in some ways perhaps even better. From all of the drugstore foundations I have tested, they never used to quite match up to their high end counter parts – never quite the same coverage, packaging, finish etc. But alas I think I’ve found one that just hits the spot.
Nip and Fab’s foundation provides a full coverage creating a flawless base and certainly reaches that #nofilter status with ease. It manages to blur out all imperfections but without that cakey look you sometimes get with too much product. Not as luxurious looking as other high-end products but I don’t think it needs anything fancy. It’s sleek and compact, perfectly portable and there’s no risk of the bottle breaking.
The affordable foundation provides a gorgeous dewy semi-matte glow which applies like a dream with fingers, a brush or a beauty blender. Though Nip and Fab provide 10 shades, they have even created a light and dark mixer so you are guaranteed to tailor make your perfect match. You really can’t go wrong.
Have you tried any of my favourite foundations or do you have any more? I’d love to hear!
