Summer Beauty Favourites

Today is June 1st which means summer is here!! [Jumps for Joy]. As the weather starts to warm up here in the UK, it can remind us of change and how good it can actually be.

Summer is the best reminder of how beautiful change can really be. Some people dread change, but when it comes to seasons changing I am all for it! Don’t get me wrong, I love winter, the comfy knitwear and cosy nights in by the fire but summer is just….summer. Its warmer, the evenings are lighter and its an excuse for more shopping (like I really need an excuse).

Switching up your wardrobes for summer is exactly the same principle for the make-up you use. When its warm wherever you live, or even when on holiday, we want to let our skin breathe and have more fun with make-up and so a lighter base, a softer look, or maybe more brighter colours come into play. I love to play with make-up and so there is nothing more I love than introducing some new favourites or even some oldies which I go back to time and time again.

Starting with base products and Becca’s cult Backlight Priming Filter. There is nothing worse than waking up with dull and tired skin and I always reach for this product on those occasions. It helps to blur out any imperfections and makes the skin look alive to give you that J-Low glow. On holiday I will often just use this as my base and a bit of concealer, skipping out foundation all together to create an even more natural healthy glow.

Foundation is probably one of my favourite products to experiment with! I feel that a lot of brands concentrate on them as a key product, all wanting to get it right. Drugstore or high end, I switch between the two regularly, always seeking for the perfect base. In the summer time, it can be hot, especially in London, rushing around getting on and off the underground, which is why I prefer a lighter coverage. More often than not, I reach for Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation which provides a light to medium coverage and a dewy finish. Every time I use this, it glides on the skin like silk and works like magic.

The longevity of the foundation is much better than you would expect, and lasts the whole working day. I like the fact that with this foundation, you can either wear it very sheer, or you can build it up for a more medium, slightly fuller looking base. The foundation comes in around 20 shades, which is fab for everyone. My colour is shade 4 for those thinking of trying it out.

There is then L’Oreals first ever concealer palette that was released a few months ago and I have not stopped using it since. At £12.99 this is one of the best concealers I have ever used. It is a serious game changer and with 3 skin tone shades to create the perfect colour for your skin and then a green tone to neutralise redness and lilac to brighten dullness, its really all you need. It has a lightweight formula that is undetectable on the skin yet the smallest use can cover anything. Oh and not forgetting the Clarins Instant Light Concealer.  I know that Sally Hughs has raved about this in the past and really is amazing for tired eyes.  Its soft enough to not drag under the delicate eye area yet has particles infused to really brighten the under eye area.

A favourite bronzer of mine for spring has to be the Max Factor Baked Bronzer which is a complete dupe for the Hourglass bronzer. It has a subtle shimmer in it and so creates the perfect natural sun kissed glow. It has been formulated with baked minerals which means you aren’t putting anything bad on your skin either for those who are concerned about that!

I have heard a lot about Laura Geller and her baked mineral products, but I hadn’t actually tried anything from the brand until a couple of months ago when I got my hand on her new Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator. From the name, it is obviously supposed to capture the finish of a well known Italian dessert and it definitely does. This golden honey highlighter is beautiful as you only have to look at the design and swatch it on the back of your hand to fall head over heels! The funny thing about this product is that it feLaura els like a cream but glides on like a powder which means it lasts a really long time when out and about in the sun. The honey golden shade is so intense that Ive even used this as a gold eyeshadow on my lids and I have to say I was impressed.

To add some colour to my cheeks, I often reach for an old favourite;  Charlotte Tilbury’s Cheek to Chic Blusher in Ecstasy.  I just love Charlotte Tilbury as a brand, the packaging and the products are to die for and this blusher is no exception. With its intense pop of peach shade, It means I can use the tiniest amount for the brightest pop of colour. Ive had this blush for around a year now and Ive not even hit the pan so the price per use is absolutely worth it! Oh and ignore the little dent in mine, I dropped it the second time I used it, but at least it didn’t smash into a million pieces.

Moving on to eyes but keeping with the Charlotte Tilbury theme, I love using her eyeshadow palette in Dolche Vita. At first glance, it looks rather harsh and more night time make-up but the colours are super buildable which means you can both indulge in a softer, summer day time look, then quickly add my absolute favourite shade, the gold shimmer, over the top of any eye shadow to go from day to night. Walla!

Now I always wear eyeliner, I just don’t feel as though my make-up is finished without one but in the summer it can look a little harsh and it can smudge onto your upper eye lid in the heat. But Lancome’s Art Liquid Liner in the shade brown is the perfect solution. The softer shade helps to define the eye but in a gentler way, and I can 100% say that this eye liner does not smudge. I had so many problems last year, especially on holiday, but I am confident that this liner can stand the heat.

The Wunder Extension Lash Stain Mascara is a new one I have been testing out lately in which I have been really impressed. It claims to last for up to 72 hours, now I don’t know about you but I don’t wear my mascara for more than 12 hours so I can’t say if it does that or not but it is one of the best lengthening mascaras I have used and I don’t know if it is just me but when I take it off my natural eye lashes seem to be darker so maybe it is staining them! Only time will tell!

Eye brows seem to be all the rage at the moment, especially with the new technique called Micro-Blading which gives you better and more fuller looking brows. If anyone knows anything about this treatment Id love to hear your thoughts or experiences on it! Anyway, Benefits Precisely My Brow Pencil is my ultimate favourite eye brow pencil! I’m not the best when it comes to filling in my eye brows, and I don’t really like the over drawn ‘Instagram brows’  but with this product, the thin twist up tip creates natural hair-like strokes so quickly and so easily. It doesn’t come off throughout the day, and yes it has a spoolie on the other end of the product. I don’t know why all eye brow pencils don’t!? I would definitely call this foolproof and would recommend you give this a go if you haven’t already.

A lip pencil and a lip gloss or tinted lip balm is one of my favourite products to apply, and I am loving Kiko’s dupe of Charlotte Tilburys Pillow Talk. Kiko’s Creamy Colour Lip Liner in the shade 302 Warm Rose is literally, and I am not even exaggerating, the exact same colour for less than half the price. A your lips but better colour which allows you create a more plumptious lip.

In the summer, who doesn’t love a bit of colour and what better way to include it that in your lipstick/lipgloss, whatever your preference is. I’m not really a lipstick kind of girl, I always have really dry lips, so a lip gloss or a lip balm is more up my street. But recently I have discovered Hourglass’ new Girl Lip Style in a bright pink shade Dreamer. Now you may think this isn’t very colourful, but this is super colourful for me, I am usually more of a nude pink gal so this is me branching out. Ha!

It has a creamy, balmy texture to it and sits in between a lip gloss and a lip stick! Not so glossy that when the wind blows, your hair gets stuck on your lip (so annoying!) but not matte in that its drying or uncomfortable.

During the summer months, I think everyone should invest in a setting spray! Especially if you are like me and either forget or don’t like to use powder. It’s not that I don’t like to use powder, I just haven’t found one that is yet to go ‘cakey’. Thats why Urban Decays All Nighter Setting Spray is the perfect replacement and I think actually works better. It generally lasts all day and all night which means that it has you covered in the summer months and will stop your make-up from sliding around or even melting off.  With other setting sprays I have found them to break me out but this is fine, so for anyone with oily skin worried about that, rest assured that this will do the job without creating more problems.

I hope this was helpful for anyone looking for any summer make up inspiration or even holiday make-up!
